Terry's Tips
Rotation
To ensure even wear and prevent sun fading, rotate your rugs 1–2 times per year.
Rug Pad
Extend the life of your rug and protect your floors (hardwood, tile, marble, etc.) by using a proper rug pad.
Vacuuming
Regular vacuuming is essential to keep your rugs vibrant. Use a floor attachment only—avoid rollers or beater bars. Always vacuum in one direction, following the rug’s natural nap. Traditionally, rugs were maintained with sweeping and brushing using brooms and hand brushes.
Professional Rug Cleaning
Every 3–5 years, consider professional hand-washing by experts like Terry. Even if your rugs aren’t subject to heavy traffic, they benefit from freshening up and fiber restoration. Remember: dry cleaning and steam cleaning can damage natural fibers like wool, silk, and cotton. The best method is professional hand-washing.

Spot Cleaning
Immediate action is your best defense against spills and accidents. You probably already have all the tools needed to spot clean at home. Products like Scotch Guard and various powders or sprays can do more harm than good, leaving stubborn residues that may reappear as stains during future cleanings.
Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide
- 1 Add water to the spill to dilute it.
- 2 Remove excess liquid by carefully scooping with a spoon (traditional method) or using a vacuum (ShopVac or similar). Avoid blotting as this can push the liquid deeper into the rug.
- 3 Prepare a simple solution: 1 cup warm water, 1–2 drops mild hand dish soap, and half a teaspoon of white vinegar. Mix well.
- 4 Pour the solution onto the stain and gently agitate the fibers with a brush or by rubbing. Remove excess liquid with a vacuum or spoon. Repeat as necessary.
- 5 Rinse with clear water, then remove remaining liquid with a vacuum or spoon. Repeat as needed.
- 6 While still damp, brush the pile in its original direction. Let the rug air dry. Once completely dry, brush again to restore a natural, soft look. Done!
Choosing Rugs Wisely
Handmade Rugs
We never recommend handmade rugs for families with pets or children, as spilled liquids can penetrate deeply into the fibers and are hard to remove completely.
Hand-Tufted Rugs
Hand-tufted rugs are even worse. They have a soft fabric backing that is glued on. These rugs are made by punching yarn through a canvas, then gluing fabric on the back to hold everything together.
Machine-Made Rugs
With machine-made rugs, liquid can pass through the weave, meaning you can rinse and clean it better without damaging the rug. Machine-made rugs, where you can see the pattern on the back, are the best choice for homes prone to accidents.
